A "vertical lime kiln" is a type of industrial furnace or oven used for the high-temperature calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate) to produce quicklime (calcium oxide). Unlike traditional horizontal kilns, vertical lime kilns have a vertical orientation, and the limestone feed is introduced from the top, while the combustion of fuel and the production of quicklime occur in the lower part of the kiln.

The key purpose of a vertical lime kiln is to heat the limestone to a temperature high enough to facilitate the chemical decomposition of the calcium carbonate into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. The quicklime produced in the kiln is a vital component in various industrial processes, including metallurgy, construction, and water treatment.

Vertical lime kilns are often preferred for their energy efficiency and relatively small footprint, making them suitable for a range of applications where quicklime is required. These kilns can be operated using different types of fuel, such as coal, natural gas, or other suitable combustible materials, depending on the specific requirements of the lime production process.

A vertical lime kiln is a stationary, vertical, cylindrical lime kiln that encompasses both mechanical shaft kilns and regular shaft kilns. Ordinary shaft kilns involve either manual feeding and unloading or mechanical feeding and manual unloading. In contrast, mechanical vertical lime kilns are employed for both mechanical feeding and unloading. Mechanical vertical kilns, when compared to regular vertical kilns, run continuously and deliver higher output, better quality, and improved labor productivity.

In recent years, China has made significant progress in the development of fully automatic, mechanized, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient active lime kilns. These kilns are approaching the advanced kiln type indicators of foreign countries.

Double Chamber Vertical

The double chamber vertical kiln, considered an advanced lime kiln, operates on the principle of parallel flow thermal storage roasting, which is known for its minimal heat consumption in the lime production industry. Current designs of double chamber vertical kilns in China have capacities ranging from 120t/d to 800t/d. Gas fuel heat consumption is as low as 850×4.18kJ/kg, and power consumption is 40kWh/t. The kilns use coal powder and gas as heat sources, which are reliable and safe, and the kiln lining life can extend to 3-6 years.

Sleeve Lime Kiln – Annular Shaft Lime Kiln

Sleeve kilns and lime shaft kilns were introduced to China in the 1980s. Presently, available specifications for sleeve lime kilns in the market range from 150t/d, 300t/d, 500t/d to 600t/d. Operating a sleeve kiln is relatively straightforward, ensuring stable product quality with a thermodynamic activity exceeding 360ml. Gas fuel heat consumption is 900×4.18kJ/kg, and power consumption is 40kwh/t, while kiln lining life can last 3-6 years. However, sleeve kilns face challenges such as complex structures, numerous irregular bricks, intricate masonry, maintenance difficulties, high infrastructure investments, and limitations in using coal powder.

Beam Kiln

A beam kiln is a lime production equipment that uses combustion beams as thermal tools to calcine lime. Since its introduction in China in 2000, over 200 beam lime kilns with capacities ranging from 100t/d to 500t/d have been built in China and exported to foreign countries. Beam kilns are versatile, accommodating various fuels such as natural gas, coke oven gas, converter gas, blast furnace gas (calorific value ≥ 800×4.18kJ/m3), mixed gas, coal powder, coke powder, heavy oil, or solid liquid. In normal production operation, the thermodynamic activity of lime can reach more than 350ml, energy consumption can be as low as 900×4.18kJ/kg, and power consumption can reach 30kwh/t.
